Community Recovery

Humboldt Eel River Valley Long Term Recovery Group

Our mission is to uplift impacted communities in the wake of the 2022 Rio Dell/Ferndale Earthquake in Humboldt County and to unite communities across the California Redwood Coast to harness resources, services and equitable support; we commit to fostering an inclusive, transparent and compassionate recovery process for all.

As we support long-term recovery, we also strive to be a model for preparedness and response in our region, enhancing the well-being and safety of our communities in the face of future disasters.

Disaster Case Management is a process where a skilled helper partners with a disaster-affected individual or family in need of a plan to achieve realistic, attainable goals for recovery following a disaster.

How to Help

Become a fiscal agent. Each LTRG needs organizations to serve as its fiscal agent. This can be done by any 501c3. Other philanthropic organizations and community foundations, in particular, can provide this service – with no or low fees – to help their region recover.

Support administrative and operating costs. Like COADs/VOADs, the staffing of an LTRG is usually done by an existing staff member at a support organization, much of this leadership work is done with limited budgets. By providing ongoing, administrative and operational support, a funder can help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of a group.

Participate in an LTRG. Instead of simply giving funds, consider joining an LTRG to get a better understanding of the disaster playing field, including the unmet needs of the most vulnerable populations in your community.

Recognize the implications of “long-term.” Disaster funding is often given in the immediate relief and response phase. However, long-term recovery groups are frequently active for years after a disaster and need ongoing funding throughout that time.

Provide multi-year funding. Allow LTRGs to focus on the clients rather than fund development by providing multi-year general operating support.

Volunteer your time, skills and labor. The scope of LTRG projects are diverse in nature, and all require human assistance to bring across the finish line - consider really getting to know your neighbors who have been impacted by disaster with a hands-on donation of your time.
